Background of the study
Visual storytelling on social media has transformed the interplay between images and language. In Nigeria, Instagram captions accompanying photos and videos frequently exhibit innovative morphological practices as users adapt their language to complement visual narratives (Okafor, 2024). These captions often include newly coined words, creative abbreviations, and hybrid forms that reflect the fusion of traditional language with modern digital aesthetics (Ibrahim, 2023). The interplay between visual elements and textual expression encourages users to break conventional morphological norms, producing a dynamic linguistic landscape. This study examines how visual storytelling influences morphological variation in Nigerian Instagram captions, exploring the processes of word formation and adaptation driven by digital affordances. It also considers cultural influences that shape the evolution of new morphological forms, providing insights into the broader impact of visual media on language (Adebayo, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Although Instagram is recognized for its innovative visual storytelling, there is limited research on how its captions drive morphological change in Nigeria. Most studies concentrate on image analysis, leaving a gap in our understanding of the textual innovations that accompany visual content. This deficiency hinders the formulation of models that integrate digital visual influences with morphological evolution in language (Chukwu, 2023).

The study is limited to analyzing Instagram captions among Nigerian users and does not extend to other platforms or offline contexts.
